We originally had a training class set with the Tsunami Rangers, but at the last minute they had to cancel due to a family emergency of the instructors. After several months of planning and practicing together, all of us had too much emotional investment to cancel to the trip. The trip was on and it was a blast. Click the links to the reports for details:
Cayucos and Montana De Oro (MDO) are in central California.
Cayucos
is just north of Morro Bay. A good description of the launch and area can be
found in Roger Schumann and Jan Shriner's book "Guide to Sea Kayaking Central
and Northern California" Route 37. Cayucos is rich in near shore and
offshore rock features. Every time I have been there it was suitable for
intermediate paddlers, or even beginners in the company of intermediates. Of
course, that's no guarantee it will be safe when you go.
Montana
De Oro is just south of Morro Bay. A good description of the launch and area can
be found in Rob Mohle's book "Adventure Kayaking trips from Big Sur to San
Diego" in tour SL6. The area is packed full of sea caves, arches, tunnels, and
other fun features. It is an area that should be paddled by advanced paddlers
only, or intermediate paddlers in the company of advanced paddlers. Try not to
get killed.
